An Interview on Being a Designer: Bold Move Studio
ttdc:
We asked Cathleen and Leon of Bold Move Studio for an interview on the experience of being designers in Trinidad and the state of TT design in general. They were nice enough to do it, despite their busy schedules. Thanks again to them.
Can you tell us a bit about yourselves?
The freelancer is a two-person design team – Cathleen Jones & Leon Murray. We provide graphic & web design services.
It began as a one-person operation in 2007 after I’d left a full-time ad agency creative position. The intention was to have my own clients but also remain as an option of remote support to in-house agency design departments. The idea was also to form a collective of sole-trader creatives that would work within ‘the freelancer’ model, where we could network and share services & ideas. That approach never truly got off the ground in the way I’d hoped – I think mainly because when working as a freelance, money can be short and budgets not enough to go around to include collaborative work; most freelance creatives just choose to go it alone… In December 2008, when Leon too began looking at the option of freelancing full-time, he became a full partner in ‘the-freelancer’.
